The opening of Berrylicious at Park Towers sparked a sense of curiosity among shoppers at the mall, who were tempted to try the brand’s frozen yoghurt thanks to the free samples being handed out for the launch on Thursday.
“This is going to be the new hangout spot for us weight-conscious girls!” remarked one customer. Her friend, A’ Level student Laleh Zaidi, spoke to The Express Tribune while ordering a second serving. “I can finally give in to my sweet tooth without feeling guilty, this tastes the same as ice cream and is actually healthy for you, which is surprising.”
Dure Sameen Akhund, who started off the ‘Californian frozen yoghurt’ venture, attempted to balance flavour and healthy eating habits with Berrylicious, advertised as being “99% fat free and absolutely zero cholesterol”. According to Akhund, even though frozen yoghurt may taste like ice cream, the brand claims that it isn’t going to make your waistline expand. “Endless hours of hard work and research have gone into this project and the outcome is that the frozen yogurt we are selling is as healthy as it is heavenly.”
According to experts, however, frozen yoghurt does have calories, which can be as low as 74 per serving depending on the brand.
An elderly couple stumbled across the stall. Usman Sher, who tried one of the samples of blueberry-flavoured yoghurt, said, “Although it has been over 40 years since I was a child, eating such things takes me back to the very day I could remember my first ice cream. Even at my age, I can eat this frozen yogurt as it does not negatively affect my health.”
Akhund believes that Pakistan’s yoghurt consumption habits make it a good market for frozen yoghurt. “Although it is surprising that such a business has not previously been initiated, we are confident that its potential in Pakistan is infinite.” She claimed that she was the first to bring the idea to Karachi, and, perhaps to Pakistan. “I can confidently say that we have introduced this product to the market for the very first time in Karachi, I have heard rumours that something similar has already been established in Lahore but it is not for sure.”
The ‘California’ label comes because all the ingredients, except for the seasonal fruit toppings, are imported from the US state. Akhund herself ate chocolate-flavoured frozen yogurt topped with shredded Oreo biscuits and chocolate chips, but her personal favourite is green apple.
Berrylicious aims to keep the products ‘affordable’. Large and medium cups cost Rs240 and Rs110, respectively and toppings such as fresh fruit, chocolate chips and syrup, are priced between Rs15 and Rs25.

I am a frequent visitor to froyo joint in park towers because one of my offices is in adjoining office segment. I was told that this is 1/3rd the calories of ice cream and amount to not more than 120-135 Kcal. I wish if its all true ;) I hope they are able to make it sugar free too! Since I take crushed almonds only, it doesn't bother me the rest of their toppings. But I agree, canned fruits isn't exactly healthy!
I think that Pinkberry also uses ready made mixes from Californian suppliers. This is industry practice and with the boom in the Frozen Yoghurt industry the suppliers are making sure that all the mixes are healthy, natural and with little or no additives. So ZaraKhan live a little and enjoy Froyo. Personally, I am glad that we have Berrylicious in town. ZaraKhan sounds like she is a competitor who wants to bring her own Frozen Yoghurt joint to Karachi. Well Berrylicious beat everyone and besides who was the second man on the moon...?
From what I understand, Berrylicious is Halal because they do not use any animal products in their mix except for milk. So no problems there. I also understand that their imported mix is All Natural and does not contain any unhealthy preservatives as they source it from the Best Suppliers in California in accordance with Federal Drug Administration's exacting health and safety standards. But I do agree that when they started their toppings needed more effort. They have now started serving fresh imported Fruits like Kiwis, Strawberrys and Blueberrys! Had it for the 4th time last night and fell in love with it all over again! :)
Why do they have to import most things from California? They should look into getting machinery so they can source yougurt locally and get machine to freeze the yogurt.
It would be nice if 100% of the ingredients were made in Pakistan. While it's great to see young entrepreneurs engaging in start-ups, businesses using imported ingredients is the last thing Pakistan's economy needs right now. I wish young people would understand that on their own without government intervention in the form of duties and taxes.
I really like frozen yoghurt but saw on the Berrylicious Facebook page that their "Frozen Yoghurt is made fresh everyday. Our mix is imported which is a complex concoction of various ingredients from California. We mix this with fresh premium 99% fat free yoghurt everyday"..
Surely if a mix is imported it has lots of additives and preservatives? These are definitely not healthy. If this is a ready made mix, is it even Halal? And what about colour in their flavours?
Also, I was disappointed with the range of toppings they had. The fruit was canned - we all know canned fruit has a really high sugar content in addition to other preservatives. Toppings in general were sub-standard.
I'd like to see some better frozen yoghurt contenders in the market. But Kudos to them for trying!
Tried Berrylicious at Park Towers and it was great. Of course one should have everything in moderation and Berrylicious is a great non fat option. Of course it has some calories but still beats having ice cream which has sugar and FAT!
I tried the froyo at Berrylicious last night. It was delicious - but I think it must have a high sugar content. It might have a low fat content but that doesn't mean it is "healthy" if it has a lot of sugar...
Just because it's yoghurt it does not necessarily mean it is healthy for you. If looking to be healthy it should definitely only be had in moderation, or in low-fat. Misconceptions should not be perpetrated to boost sales.
i remember getting a frozen yogurt from Berrylicious years ago in NY. it was pretty good. very healthy.
Good stuff...
