Helping out: UoP to expand market to support poor students
University of Peshawar will expand a commercial building on land donated for poor students’ benefit.
PESHAWAR:
The University of Peshawar will expand a commercial building on land donated for poor students’ benefit.
The university intends to build a three-storey building in place of the current building that houses 16 shops, the income from which will be used to support poor students.
To finalise the plan for the project, a two-member delegation from the Fatima Memorial Trust in Lahore, the partner organisation, visited the university here on Thursday.
Director Planning and Development Bacha Munir Bukhari presented the work plan for construction of the newly proposed building. He said that the two-kanal plot was donated to UoP in 1972, where presently there are 16 shops. The income from these shops is not enough to support students so they are expanding the building.
He said the varsity intends to build a three-storey building in this area which would house 32 shops, while the basement as well as top floor of the proposed building would be used for academic purposes.
The chairperson of Fatima Memorial System said that she wishes to include a portion of the newly-constructed building for a state of the art academic programme.
UoP Vice-Chancellor Professor Azmat Hayat Khan said that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) made cuts in the budget of the universities and asked the administration to generate their own resources.
He said that despite financial constraints 75 to 100 per cent fee concession was given to the deserving students each year amounting to Rs20 million to Rs24 million.
