The fairest of them all: Paintings that focus on the strength of women

‘I Am Woman’ exhibit opens at Gallery Louvre.

ISLAMABAD:

“I Am Woman” pays tribute to women and the paintings featured use heavy meals, myths and rural charisma to present their messages to viewers. The exhibition comprising works of three artists opened at Gallery Louvre here on Wednesday.

A S Rind, an established artist from Rahim Yar Khan has been painting since 1984 and has participated in over 30 exhibitions, including international events. His paintings are mostly inspired by Faiz and Ghalib’s verses and portray women in cubic abstract form; with bright colours and adornments, the Cholistan, Thar and Rajastan inspirations are clear. “It is mainly the colours and moods of the areas that I enjoy depicting,” Rind said.

Ukraine-born Natalia Khair, participating for the first time in a group exhibition, uses female-inspired mythology in her sketches of women as fantasy goddesses. With fine lines and pen-based colourful fillings, her women are simultaneously mysterious and alluring, though more finesse with the presentation would have been preferred instead of framing pages torn directly from a sketchpad. On closer inspection, what makes her work unique is there are no breaks in the lines in any of her pieces.

For those looking for originality in abstract art, M Hussain’s work fits the bill. The Jomshoro-based artist, who’s also participating in a group show for the first time, uses the dot-act technique. Up close, the pieces all seem abstract but a short distance lends clarity and the detail and the expressions do little to betray the intricacy of the technique used.

Each rural woman portrayed has been done so by blowing bubbles through a straw directly onto the canvas, which group together to form grids. “Everything created by God is beautiful. Sometimes life’s beauty stops me in my tracks; in my humble way I try to capture that beauty,” Hussain said.

The exhibit will continue till November 14.
