Top-seed David Ferrer made light work of his compatriot Fernando Verdasco to win 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Valencia Open 500. Ferrer, currently number five in the world, broke Verdasco’s serve for the first time in the eighth game and never looked back against the world number 24. Meanwhile, former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 7-6 (6-2), world number eight Jo-Wilfred Tsonga struggled to a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory against wild-card entry Javier Marti, and third-seed Gael Monfils beat Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-1 victory.
