5 union council secretaries suspended for negligence

Show cause notices issued to three town municipal officers.

LAHORE:

Secretaries of five union councils were suspended by the district coordination officer on Tuesday and three town municipal officers served show cause notices for negligence in the city government’s campaign against dengue.

The decision was taken on recommendation of the CDGL Environment Department after the latter found dengue mosquitoes breeding sites at several used-tyre godowns in the areas.

District Officer (Environment) Tariq Zaman said action was recommended after Environment Department officials found measures taken for eradication of breeding sites and prevention of the disease’s outbreak inadequate.

Those suspended are Muhammad Iqbal of Union Council-1 (Begum Kot), Abdul Ghaffar of UC-8 (Jia Musa), Khalid Yasin of UC-120 (Ali Raza Abad), Muhammad Iqbal of UC-133 (Township) and Abdul Qayyum of UC-139 (Green Town).

The TMOs issued show-cause notices are Muhammad Arif, the Allama Iqbal Town TMO; Mir Akmal, the Nishter Town TMO; and Chaudhry Arshad, the Ravi Town TMO.

The secretaries expressed disappointment at their suspension and said that they had ensured that all used tyre godowns in their union councils were fumigated.

They said they had been working with the members of National and Provincial Assemblies and their coordinators since the outbreak of the disease. They said they followed directions from the MNAs, MPAs and their coordinators. “The coordinators made me spray some areas twice a day at the cost of other areas in the union council,” said one of the suspended secretaries.
