Make way for Abbas Ali Khan

The pop singer talks about his new single and tribute to Jagjit Singh.

KARACHI:

Pakistan is known for its pop and rock bands, however, solo artists, apart from the likes of Sajjad Ali, haven’t managed to have the same impact. Abbas Ali Khan, the genius behind “Sun Re” released in 2006 — a song that left the music aficionados convinced of his vocal talent — is all set for a return to the mainstream music scene. Khan is currently working on a fresh video and a tribute to the late Jagjit Singh.

The singer, who was busy learning classical music, also confirmed he was searching for the most suitable sound for future tracks during this time when he had taken a back seat from mainstream appearances. “My new song will give listeners a small taste of the kind of sound that I’ll be touching upon in my singles,” Khan told The Express Tribune.

Love-struck

Khan’s new song “Par Mein Hoon Ruka Sa” is essentially a love song that captures the nostalgia or the state of mind in the absence of one’s beloved. The video has been directed by new film-maker Usman Mukhtar — also known as Joey — and Khan claims he is working hard to get the best cut for the video. “Just like my other videos, this one will also have an element of surprise,” says the pop singer, his voice laced with excitement.

Although he is releasing a new single, Khan admits he doesn’t have plans to launch a music album. “Albums are getting lost in the current scenario,” says Khan, highlighting the state of the music industry. Concluding that the audience is more interested in the video than the song itself, Khan admits one should either release an album with 10 videos at one time or just do singles with videos. His last album had some great songs that remained unheard, primarily because they did not have videos. “I’ll only do singles, one every three months, and yes a lot of gigs as well — an area I have not explored yet — but there will be a lot more stage now.”

The present condition of the country is not really supportive of musicians, as art and entertainment can only flourish in a place where people don’t have to worry about basic necessities. “Unfortunately, Pakistan’s current situation isn’t ideal for music to progress. However, I’m optimistic and hope that once the situation in the country improves, the pop industry will also evolve,” states Khan.

Although the overall music industry might be facing a slump, it’s worth mentioning that the music scene in Islamabad is gaining momentum. “Oh yes, definitely, and thanks to places like Kuch Khaas for making it happen,” adds the talented vocalist.

Tribute to Jagjit Singh

Khan, who feels that the death of Jagjit Singh is a huge loss, is also preparing up for a tribute on November 4 at the Islamabad Club. The solo tribute concert ‘Mera Geet Amar Kar Do’ is being organised by the event management company Lush. “I’ll only be singing ghazals by Singh, and 10 other musicians will accompany me. I’m very excited about this concert,” says Khan.
