Martial art uniforms: Sialkot meets 30% of world demand

China is top competitor but it is losing market share.

SIALKOT:

Sialkot has become the fourth largest producer of readymade garments and sportswear in Pakistan, particularly martial arts uniforms, said Chief Coordinator of Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA), Ijaz A Khokhar.

Talking to media, he said Sialkot is exporting 30% of worldwide demand for martial art uniforms. China is a major competitor, but it is losing market due to increase in labour costs, as a result of which worldwide business is now diverting from China to Pakistan, he added. “We have to prepare ourselves to handle this incoming business,” he said. Khokhar further said this flow of business to Pakistan will continue for a long period and for this purpose, “we need to train our workforce, both male and female, for qualitative growth of the apparel industry”.

He was of the opinion that more business could be attracted by producing trained workforce and controlling labour cost. “By virtue of this, Pakistan can become a favourite choice for outsourcing of major brands,” he added.
