Damage estimates submitted to Asian Development Bank.

HYDERABAD:

Monsoon rains this year caused a total loss of Rs3.2 billion to government and private sector infrastructure in Hyderabad, according to a summary of losses provided to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The city received 513 millimetres of rain in three spells from August to September.

According to Director Finance and Planning Ejazul Hassan, who briefed the ADB delegation at a meeting, rain damaged 343 roads, 304 school buildings and 105 other government buildings, which will cost an estimated Rs1.2 billion in repair work.

Private sector losses of Rs2 billion include 38,553 acres of damaged cropland, 13,219 partially and 7,405 fully damaged houses, industrial infrastructure, goods stored in warehouses and poultry farms.

After the monsoon rains, the ADB has so far announced $100 million funds for infrastructure rehabilitation in coastal areas of Thatta and Badin, besides a grant of Rs261 million for ration supplies.

Umar Zia, who represented ADB at the meeting, said they have noted complaints about ill-planned roads and infrastructure in flood-hit districts. According to Zia, the ADB is assessing damages and reconstruction needs in flood-stricken parts of Sindh and Balochistan.
