Pakistan has been relying on the duo for over a decade, especially in the Davis Cup, and since both players have crossed their 30s, the country needs players who can fill the vacuum after the experienced duo call it a day.
The PTF President Dilawar Abbas said the federation is well aware of the situation and was actively searching for players through various talent hunt programmes and events that also offer attractive prize-money.
“Aisam and Aqeel can represent the country for only a few more years and we definitely need players who can replace them,” Abbas told The Express Tribune adding that a plan has been chalked out scouting for young blood.
“The federation will hold three national tournaments this year in Islamabad which will offer handsome prize money. Apart from this, we’ve also planned talent-hunt events.”
Abbas, however, added that the PTF was facing a lot of difficulty in achieving their objective as it was not getting a good response from youngsters as well as government.
“We lack the required funds because of decreased government support and without financial help our future of becoming a top tennis nation is bleak.
With regards to the youngsters, their parents are not willing to send their children to the courts and that also is a huge obstacle we’re facing.
“However, there are some players which the PTF is watching closely and we’re hopeful to see them represent the country in Davis Cup. Take Aisam’s cousin, Samir Iftikhar, for example. He’s just 18 and is showing great improvement; maybe he will be winning accolades for the country in future.”
