Nomination of SC Judges: Committee has two weeks to consider

Two weeks to make recommendations on the Judicial Commission’s nomination of four judges for elevation to the SC.

LAHORE:
A parliamentary committee has two weeks to make its recommendations on the Judicial Commission’s nomination of four judges for elevation to the Supreme Court. One of the people on the list is the LHC chief justice. According to Article 175 of the Constitution, the committee requires a three-fourths majority to reject or a simple majority to confirm a nominee. If it is unable to confirm or reject a candidate, the nominee stands automatically confirmed. The committee passes on the names to the prime minister, who forwards them to the president for notification. This step is a formality since neither can reject the committee’s recommendations. The committee consists of eight members.
