Atiqa Odho, whose career kick-started in 1992 with Anwar Maqsood’s TV series “Sitara aur Mehrunissa”, became a household name in Pakistan in a short span of time. After establishing herself as an actor, Odho later starred in a string of successful films, including Jo Darr Gya Woh Marr Gya, Mummy and Mujhe Chand Chahiye.
The Express Tribune sat down for a tete-a-tete with the actor, who spoke at length regarding why she is so keen on promoting a positive image of Pakistan and why she discourages Bollywood films in Pakistan.
‘Sitara Aur Mehrunissa’ was a TV serial that set the standards. Following that, you became a household name. Every modern woman in Pakistan wanted to be like you. How do you feel about that?
I think I’ve been very fortunate. Yes, that play was a turning point and I became a household name after that, however, invasion of privacy is something I wasn’t prepared for. Although, I’m a very reserved person, I was forced to come out in the public circle. But this is the price you have to pay and I’m not complaining. Actors are created by the public. It’s the people who make us and we, at our end, need to give back to society.
Why did you step into Lollywood?
There’s a lot of good talent in Lollywood but there are no jobs. It is sad to see how Pakistani cinema has been marginalised. I want people to realise that wherever cinema is encouraged, a soft image of the country is promoted. Performing arts contribute to the national interest of the country and an artist is a true ambassador of the country.
Therefore, we have a double responsibility on our shoulders: to soften the image of the country, which is becoming increasingly negative and to send out a message to the world that even Pakistan has liberal people.
You could’ve also chosen Bollywood or improved plays/dramas on the small screen?
I am a Pakistani before anything else. It’s a choice I made, that I would work and live amongst my people. One must be proud of investing in his/her country.
You have consistently criticised the invasion of Bollywood films. However, Lollywood is not producing a lot of films. Don’t you think people will need some sort of cinema entertainment?
The cinema industry has suffered gravely due to years of neglect and lack of corporate support. When you produce a product, it needs financial support to be sold in the market. Sadly, many people are without jobs in Lollywood and I believe it’s our national duty to protect them.
Why do we need to project Bollywood films in Pakistan? Although I don’t shun this idea completely, I would ideally want a reciprocal relationship, that is, if we promote Bollywood films in Pakistan, India should also promote our films.
Tell us about your philanthropic activities?
I have been socially active for a long time now. I have been associated with promoting awareness of blood cancer and breast cancer. There are high incidents of breast cancer in Pakistan and I fail to understand why most women are not open about the problem; it’s not a stigma, it is nothing to be ashamed of. If detected early, there are high chances of survival; hence, I have made a tele-film called Chalo Phir Say Jee Lain to highlight this issue.
More recently, I have been busy in Jacobabad with health camps facilitating people who have Hepatitis B.

I am British National, so it's fine if I carry wine ... http://e.jang.com.pk/12-11-2011/Karachi/pic.asp?picname=4248.gif
A good actress of 1990s. I loved her in Dramas, but since she turned to be beautician or have learned, she is different women.
@Dheebaj Khan:
Dheebaj I'm sure many would be surprised just like you , but the thing is how can anyone assume credibility of a female Muslim Pakistani celebrity , who uses politics to help enhance her ageing stardom and has more than a little to do with alcohol.
By reading this article I have deduced that humanity has become even more materialistic where people are being valued based on their physical beauty , temporary stardom and self proclaimed achievements.
And I also personally believe that philanthropy doesnt just start with blood & breast cancer wars...
I am surprised to read the comments made by Ms. Odho. She is a well educated, well traveled and comes from the privileged class. But her thinking shows a person who is narrow minded or just saying for sake of saying. Why she forgot that she participated in Indian shows in the past, sang Dil Dil Pakistan, Jaan Jaan Hindustan (I attended the event in New jersey, where she performed with Mr. Nitin Mukesh). Later she tried many efforts to join Bollywood - upon rejection (they needed talent, just not beauty). Failed attempts, made her to talk against India - Such a Hypocrites.
I could not agree more.
I too shun work in Bollywood - not that anyone has ever offered me a role or even knows of my existence.
If I were to work in Bollywood, however, I fully expect India to promote my films.
I like her comment, "Pakistan first" and her loyalty to improving the entertainment industry in Pakistan. Every nation has to have its own entertainment industry.
What about the wine bottles?
In the 80's Pakistani plays (i still remember Dhoop Kinare) you produce quality and it will sell the world over. Just remember people have to buy tickets with their hard earned money .
Realy you are a great pakistani woman.
Atiqa, you are so beautiful.
she is a class act thats all your honour.
Atiqa, it would be a honor if you get an offer to work in an Indian movie! How it will affect your "Pakistani First" notion. After all you have dual nationality besides a Pakistan a British national also. You do not have to be holier than the pope! Good luck. We love you very much. You are a very beautiful & graceful lady.
@Nina Akbar:
Mohtarma first of all AOA and then I ask you to tell us the circumstances of that alcohol incident .
If you dont mind , ofcourse...
@Emmad: Grass is always greener on the other side.
@Dr Priyanka:
Having Alcohol or keeping it in luggage while traveling is illegal in Pakistan. Yes in PAKISTAN.
If she really a Pakistani and care for Pakistan then face the court and give her arrest. Only doing drawing room talks is not making her credible at all
Beauty with Brain... A very rare combination... Which she has.....
She is charming, intelligent, beautiful and stable person with clear vision. The qualities not found in Khan and Mohsin-e-Pakistan.
She is very much the Communication Secretary of APML. The rumors of her leaving the party or party leaving her are not true.
Regardless of her personal lifestyle, I agree with her on the role artists play in building a country's image. Artists, philanthropists, and scientists present the most important role in establishing soft image of a country.
@Dr. Ismail Nami: I could not understand what you mean by alcohol incident. Did she commit a crime under the influence of alcohol or was driving while inebbriated? And pray why was she sacked? Are do I smell a rat here? Some country going back to stone ages with jet speed!
She was immediately sacked as the VP of APML after the Alcohol incident... Musharraf plays his cards very well... huh!
I have been Atiqa's fan since my teenages..those mesmerizing emerald green eyes...that fair complexion that can make Turks jealous...that graceful personality....She is truely beautiful...and a gem of a human being!
@Jaani: What is so wrong about using alcohol.It is widely used in whole world including Iran and Saudi Arabia. Things in Pakistan would become much better if we legalize drinking.
"...if we promote Bollywood films in Pakistan, India should also promote our films." Is she expecting Indian government to promote Lollywood films? What would you demand after that? That India should pay Lollywood an amount equal to what Bollywood films earn in Pakistan on their own? Precisely because Bollywood films stand on their own merits or demerits, they do not require or expect any "promoting". No "sifarishi tattoo" in the world of art, please! Bollywood films are shown all over the world. No other nation insists that their inferior products be "promoted" in India. It doesn't work like that in a democracy.
Thought she was forced to quit because of an arrest and court case on bypassing airport customs carrying liquor?
I admired her until she joined the dictator fan club. Should we attribute her anti-democratic thinking to her rural Sindh origins?
She is a great lady with graceful acting and beauty.
like anyone is gonna pay her or even give her a guest role in bollywood..[:d]..
Ms.Odho - get ready to face the court for your alcohol related charges!
I wish you good luck for that!
Why Express Tribune didn’t asked her questions about the ongoing politics in the country.
Atiqa Odho has joined APML (Musharraf) and she is the Vice President.
The question arises: will Atiqa Odho remain a household name after she has joined politics?
She is my favorite :)
