Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif was cleared to visit Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) tomorrow to launch his election campaign after the Election Commission issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) on Monday.

The G-B Assembly elections are due to take place on June 7, with political parties making a final push to mobilise voters across the region before campaigning officially ends later this week. However, allegations by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) that the party had been barred from campaigning further intensified the political temperature in the region.

A notification issued by the Election Commission Secretariat of G-B stated that, “Upon due consideration, the honourable chief election commissioner, G-B, has been pleased to accord permission/NOC for the visit of Nawaz Sharif, president of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), to G-B on June 2, 2026, for participation in election-related activities.”

It further added that the permission/NOC was subject to strict compliance with the Elections Act, 2017, applicable election laws and rules, and the Code of Conduct for General Elections 2026.

“Any violation thereof shall entail legal consequences under the relevant election laws and may result in appropriate proceedings against the concerned candidate(s) and other persons responsible for such violation,” it stated.

Senior Minister of Punjab and PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Nawaz would undertake a one-day visit to G-B on Tuesday, as the region prepares for upcoming elections.

"During the visit, the party chief is expected to meet party leaders and ticket holders. He will also hold consultations on the electoral situation in G-B and matters related to public development," she added.

PTI leaders Asad Qaiser and Junaid Akbar have accused the authorities of obstructing their election activities and restricting movement into the region.

On Saturday, Qaiser said he was prevented from reaching Islamabad airport and missed his flight to Skardu for campaign activities. Separately, Akbar was detained by G-B police in Hunza while campaigning, for not possessing an NOC.

Following the accusations levied by Qaiser and Akbar, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi wrote to the chief justice of the Supreme Appellate Court of G-B, seeking immediate judicial intervention into the matter. He also warned that he would personally travel to G-B if the detained parliamentarians were not released soon.

jani | 3 weeks ago | Reply Election commission only job is to conduct fair elections in country which is by the way they were not able to conduct in history of our homeland. They have been made a tool now by powerful circles to control and malice political candidates and hurt democracy in country by giving such baseless authroity of giving NOCs to political parties to particiapte in election campaignes. Country and its people have been under siege to bureacracy judiciary under the patronship of Military top brass. Its a shame.
