KU teachers ask governor to revoke Malik’s degree

Teachers society demand an impartial committee to be constituted to award degrees.

KARACHI:

The teachers society of Karachi University passed a unanimous resolution asking the chancellor, Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, and the vice chancellor, Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, to revoke the honorary doctorate degree awarded to Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik.

The resolution also demanded that an impartial commission be formed to probe the system of awarding honorary doctorates. The president of Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS), Dr Hasnain Abid, said that the faculty members will observe a two-hour boycott of all academic activities on October 26.

However, the general secretary, Dr Shakeel Farooqui, said that the teachers who attended the ceremony did so because of pressure due to their administrative positions as heads of the departments. He said that the society will decide its next step on October 29, after its general body elections.
