Out of hand: Unruly students prompt KU employee protest

Students barred from administration block after two of them argued with staffer.

KARACHI:

The Karachi University’s non-teaching staff went on strike from Friday morning till Saturday afternoon after members of a student political party misbehaved with an employee in the administration block.

It appears that the dispute began when two students went to the administration department demanding the promotion of an employee, Bashir Khan from grade 13 to 16. Khan is a computer operator in the registration department for private candidates.

The two students asked for his file so they could have a look. When Yousuf, another administration employee, refused, they began arguing and shouting at each other.

The angered union called for a strike and stopped the university’s transportation system from working.

The employees boycotted non-teaching activities, closed the administration block offices, examination department, registration section, enrolment section, library and other offices and gathered at the administration block to protest. They submitted an application about their objection with the administration. The students meanwhile, handed their own application against irregularities in administration issues.

The university administration took notice of the situation and KU Registrar Prof. Kaleem Raza Khan issued a notification that restricted students from entering the administration block, examination department, registration section and enrolment section. The employees ended their strike after Pro Vice-Chancellor Nasiruddin Khan met the union and assured them that nothing like this would happen again and accepted their demand to keep students from interfering in official work. He said he would personally take action if another such incident is reported.
