Public security: Punjab govt constitutes teams to curb kidnappings

Move comes after intelligence reports about rising incidents of abductions.

LAHORE:

In a bid to counter increasing incidents of kidnapping for ransom, the Punjab government has finalised the formation of teams that will undertake abduction cases at district levels across the province.

The move comes in light of intelligence reports, which state that rising incidents of kidnapping for ransom are becoming a major challenge for law enforcement agencies (LEAs), sources familiar with the matter said.

A report prepared by a department of the Punjab government highlights that rising trends of kidnapping for ransom need to be averted in order to restore a sense of security in the public. It further states that anti-kidnapping teams (AKTs) must be established in each district and its members should be specially trained to handle such cases.

Following incidents of kidnapping for ransom of three high-profile personalities in Lahore, as well as a sizeable number of abduction cases across the province, the provincial government decided to constitute AKTs at district levels, sources and official documents confirmed.

South Punjab

Another report by an intelligence agency said that the incidents of abduction for ransom have particularly increased in south Punjab.

About 147 such incidents have been reported in Rahim Yar Khan in three months alone.
