Traffic snare: People stranded on roads as PPP holds rally

Police blocks all major roads for security measures.

PESHAWAR:

People had to face long durations of traffic jams on Wednesday afternoon as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) rallied to welcome its new provincial chief.

The rally, attended by hundreds of PPP activists, was held by the party’s newly appointed Provincial Chief Sardar Ali Khan.

Unprecedented security measures were taken for the procession, which took place from Firdous Chowk to the Provincial Assembly. The police closed down all the roads leading to the area, causing a huge traffic mess across the city.

The police did not allow public transport to enter Sher Shah Suri Road near the FC Headquarters. They diverted the traffic towards the Shouba Bazaar, which resulted in a huge traffic jam at Shouba Chowk.

Vehicles in Khyber Bazaar, located adjacent to the Shouba Chowk, were also stuck in a gridlock. Moreover, the Suray Pul, Grand Trunk (GT) Road, Charsadda Road and Hospital Road also had to bear the brunt of the diverted traffic, with people having to wait for more than an hour for the traffic to clear.

To add pain to people’s miseries, the traders of Yadgar Chowk took out a protest on the GT Road as soon as the procession ended, disrupting traffic and causing troubles to the citizens. The traders, however, moved their protest to the service road after a short while, clearing the road.

Most of the commuters travelling on public transport had to travel to their destinations on foot due to the traffic jam.
