China attaches great importance to Pakistan's request for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported.
This follows after India's attempt in September this year to obtain a permanent seat in the UNSC had finally fizzled out due to lack of support from other member states, after an intensive six-year campaign.
Pakistan voiced its desire to have a seat on the UNSC at the 66th General Assembly session in September.
China supports Pakistan playing a bigger part in maintaining international peace and security, Jiang said at a daily press briefing, noting that China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners.
UNSC consists of five permanent members - China, France, Russia, the United States and Britain, and 10 other non-permanent members that are elected for two-year terms.
An election scheduled for Friday will determine the new non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, a UN official told reporters.
Earlier United Arab Emirates (UAE) too extended its support to Pakistan for its candidacy for a United Nation’s Security Council non-permanent seat.
Meanwhile Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Abdullah Haroon says he was confident of country's success in the elections on Friday.
Pakistan‚ a six-term candidate for the Asian seat on the Security Council‚ faces a challenge from Kyrgyzstan. Those elected‚ will replace Lebanon‚ Bosnia & Herzegovina‚ Brazil‚ Gabon and Nigeria‚ whose two-year terms end on December 31, 2011.
Earlier in 2010, US President Obama had hinted on supporting India’s demand to have a permanent seat on the UN Security Council while Beijing had welcomed India's election as a non-permanent member of UNSC but didn’t disclose its intentions about supporting New Delhi's case for a permanent member. China is the only one of the five permanent members of UNSC that has not announced its decision to support India.

Let us hope Pakistan gets elected and sits with the five big powers in the UNSC. It would be a great victory and achievement, just like having more than hundred of nuclear weapons. This should improve the plight of most Pakistanis and would bring them out of poverty, improve healthcare, education, generate instant power, eradicate corruption and terrorism, and bring peace and prosperity to our poor masses. Pakistan has been a member of UNSC before and would be elected again in future as well. However, the above problems are urgent and need attention and first priority, not false greatness. This election would give prominance to a few people but would not solve a single problem that Paksitan is facing.

Whoever gets it, gets it. There's never been any reason to complain about Pakistan's attempt or to worry about what it will harm afterwards as it's harmless no matter how you look at it. Any complaints will be small and personal. Though I wouldn't be surprised if those small and personal complaints end up coming all the same since it seems Pakistan always looks at things like a competition where the other is out to get them and that always sparks something. Given, the competition aspect is there since votes are involved, but the "out to get them part"... Not so much.

I remember last minute diplomatic maneuver by US when Somalia contested for UNSC seat and Mauritius took the seat finally.

Given what is happening at the Afghan front, it is a desire for China, India, Iran, UAE, Turkey, Etc., to support PAK and US and NATO to oppose it.
While PAK bid for SC seat may be desirable, it is a bad timing for PAK to muster support. It all depends if India throws in her support for PAK or Kyrgyzstan. It should be remembered that India has an accord with Kyrgyzstan.
In case people have forgotten, the last few times when PAK was at SC she had the backing of US.

Misleading information. Pakistan and Kyrghystan are contesting fro the non-permanent UN security council seat this time. India is not even contesting. SO why would India be surprised or concerned that China is supporting Pakistan. The nes item has tried to link up Pakistan's campaign for the 2 year non-permanent seat with India's capaign for a permamanent seat. The 2 are completely unrelated.
This email causes unnecessary hearburn. It is also unsupported by any statements from either india's PM or foreign minister or foreign office that indicate India is not happy about this situation.
this news is completely confusing.. The election that is going to be held this friday is for the term Jan 2012 - dec 2013, which is what pakistan is competing for. Indias terms is frm Jan 2011 - Dec 2012 ( we have got one more year to go). Non permament memebership is a 10 member seat with 2 seat from each continent for a period of two years.so if pakistan wins this election, we will see pakistan and india as a non permament member at the same time...
Regarding Indias aspiration for a permament membership. Its a well known fact that china has objection so its going to be long take..and big 5 are reluctant to share the power with G4 countries,that they enjoy for last 60 years.. what china is indicating is their support for non permament membership, where is the question of india apsiration is coming here, when we already member.. there is no talk about permament membership at the moment..
I dont see, where and how india got ditched, as we very well know chinas position, and chinese knows its a good strategic card that they will play to get their things work in their favour..and for india, its a mountaneous task to get this done, so is it for germany brazil and japan too..lets see how it rolls out..
We Indians don't care about a non-permanent seat anyway. What will Pakistan achieve even if it gets elected. Even a permanent seat does not matter much in today's times since UN has lost its meaning and is a toothless organization. Go for it Pakis, good luck!

This piece of "news" is misleading. One, why would India be disturbed by China's support for Pakistan? Are China-Pak relations something new? Second, Pakistan supported India's seat at the UNSC a couple of years ago and Pakistan's ambassador commented that he expected India to support Pakistan this time around. The comment about India's permanent UN seat bid is irrelevant, just another propaganda piece with nothing revealing just a catchy headline to perpetuate the "India out to get us" narrative.
