Foreign agencies not to be given access to border management system: Malik

New IBM systems designed to keep record of all passengers at transit points, aiding arrest of terrorists, traffickers.

ISLAMABAD:
Interior minister Rehman Malik says no foreign agency would be given data access to Pakistan’s new Integrated Border Management (IBM) system.

Malik, who inaugurated the new IBM system at the Benazir International Airport in Islamabad on Friday, said that the software has been designed to verify a person’s criminal record and see if he or she is involved in any acts of terrorism or human trafficking.

The new IBM systems replace an earlier version of this system which had been installed by former President Pervez Musharraf. The system keeps a record of all passengers passing through a port whether that is an airport or a border crossing.

Rehman Malik said similar identification and record-keeping software will be installed at all national airports and at Pak-Afghan border crossings, with the aim to aid security personnel monitoring the Pak-Afghan border.

He said that between 40,000 to 50,000 people cross Pak-Afghan border on a daily basis and the software will help nab militants and extremists.

The program is expected to be implemented in the next three months.

Interior secretary, DG FIA and NADRA deputy chairman were also present at the ceremony.
