Makeshift arrangements: Sanghar judge hit on the head as ‘courtroom’ ceiling collapses

Hearing was underway in agriculture department.

HYDERABAD:

A judge became the latest victim of the monsoon rain when a rickety part of the ceiling of his makeshift Sanghar courtroom caved in, leaving him with a head injury.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Aftab Ahmed Bughio was hearing a case on Thursday at the office of the EDO of the agriculture department when the mishap occurred. After he was given first aid treatment, Bughio was taken to a hospital in Hyderabad for a check-up.

“The court work was suspended for almost a month because the court building was submerged in floodwaters,” said Nand Kumar Goklani of the district bar association who was present at the time of the incident. “The roof collapsed during the hearing with the debris falling directly on the head of the judge.”

The court went back to work a few days ago in the agriculture department.

The Sindh High Court took notice of the event and has asked the district administration to explain.

Sanghar DCO Ghulam Hyder Mangrio, who went to hospital to inquire about the judge’s condition, told reporters that the agriculture building was temporarily given to the court on the district bar’s request. “Like other offices and residential areas of Sanghar, the building of the district and sessions court was also engulfed by the floodwater,” he said. When asked why a tumbledown structure was selected for court proceedings, the DCO said he was not aware of the building’s condition.
