Yellow Cab Scheme: Court orders meters in all taxis

“the fate of this yellow cab scheme will be no different than the previous one in 1992”, LHC judge.

LAHORE:

Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood Khan of the Lahore High Court on Thursday ordered the Punjab government to install meters in all taxis being offered under the Chief Minister’s Yellow Cab Scheme.

Petitioner Syed Ahmad Azeem, through Advocate Mansoor Usman Awan, submitted that Section 53(1)(c)(vii) of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance of 1965, read with Rule 124 of the Motor Vehicle Rules of 1969, mandated that all cabs have meters.

He said that the scheme was being financed by public money so it was critical that it follow the law, otherwise “the fate of this yellow cab scheme will be no different than the previous one in 1992”. The petitioner also asked the court to direct the government to ensure that only unemployed, educated young people were given the taxis and they used them for public transport only.
