TEL AVIV: Israel has agreed to a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas to secure the release of captive soldier Gilad Shalit, who will be free “in days,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday.

“We have concluded arduous negotiations with Hamas to release Gilad Shalit. He will be coming home in the next few days,” the premier said in a nationally televised address.

Palestinian sources said Israel had agreed to release around 1,000 prisoners in exchange for the soldier, in a deal which would be implemented later this week.

Sources from Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine al Qassam Brigades, confirmed the deal, saying the exchange would take place “within a week.”
