Hockey: Rehan, Akbar not given ‘incentive contracts’
Abbas granted Category A along with Imran, Abbasi.
KARACHI:
Former captains Rehan Butt and Zeeshan Ashraf, and experienced goal-keeper Salman Akbar were overlooked as the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) handed out ‘incentive contracts’ to 24 players.
While the names of the two seasoned players are missing, penalty-corner specialist Sohail Abbas has been included in Category A, entitled to Rs50,000 a month, with effect from July 1 to November 30. Other players who feature in the list are captain Mohammad Imran and his deputy Shakeel Abbasi.
The players in Category B will get a monthly sum of Rs40,000 while inductees in Category C will receive Rs30,000. The federation has also picked six junior players who will receive a monthly stipend of Rs15,000.
According to a PHF official, Akbar has been overlooked because the federation was not content with his decision to snub Pakistan’s tour to Australia over his commitment with a Dutch League. Butt was neglected for a poor show while Ashraf, who has not played since the Asian Games in November, was ignored for his absence in international assignments.
Category A
Sohail Abbas, Waseem Ahmed, Shakeel Abbasi, Rashid Mehmood, Fareed Ahmed, Muhammad Imran and Muhammad Waqas
Category B
Abdul Haseem Khan, Muhammad Rizwan Senior and Muhammad Irfan
Category C
Muhammad Zubair, Shafqat Rasool, Muhammad Tousiq, Syed Imran Shah, Syed Kashif Shah, Muhammad Rizwan Junior, Ali Shan and Muhammad Umar Bhutta
Juniors: Tasawwar Abbas, Muhammad Bilal Qadir, Muhammad Suleman, Muhammad Irfan, Muhammad Umair and Mazhar Abbas
