A woman committed suicide on Wednesday over delay in justice after the rape and murder of her five-year-old daughter. Uzma Bibi hanged herself with a sling tied to the ceiling fan of her room when her husband was away to attend the hearing of the case of their daughter’s assailant.
Her two children arrived at the scene of the incident and told neighbours about it. “Our mother is hanging in her room with her tongue sticking out,” they said.
According to police, the neighbours discovered her dead body hanging in the room and informed her husband, Zeeshan Abbas, about the occurrence.
Later, the body was sent to the Divisional Headquarter Hospital Rawalpindi and handed back to the family for burial after post mortem.
According to police, Uzma Bibi had gone to Bari Imam shrine along with her two daughters and son in June. Her eldest daughter who was five-years-old was kidnapped from the shrine.
The same day, her dead body was recovered. The post mortem of the minor girl revealed that she had been raped before murder. The Secretariat Police in Islamabad arrested the person accused for the incident last month, who was then presented before the court.
RA Bazar Police said that on Thursday, Uzma’s husband had gone to the district courts Islamabad to attend the hearing of the case.
In his absence, Uzma first went to her neighbours downstairs to vent about the ordeal. She told the women that she “just could not forget her daughter” and what had happened to her and sought a remedy for her condition. Later, she went to market and brought a sling.
“Are you going to make a swing for us?” asked her two minor children. She told them that their father would do that for them on his return from the courts.
The children went out to play and she hanged herself to death. Her neigbour informed the police that Uzma frequently used to talk about the delay in decision against the rapist and killer of her minor girl.
Her husband also confirmed that Uzma was finding it difficult to bear the shock of their daughters’ death.
Police said it was a case of suicide and on the request of victim’s family, police closed the case.
For the motive behind the suicide, police ruled out poverty as a cause. “Her husband was a cab driver and was earning a good livelihood,” said the investigation officer.
“The murder and rape of her five-year-old daughter was too hard for her to live with,” he said.
