Cricket: Banned trio and agent go on trial today
Butt, Amir and Asif face spot-fixing charges.
LONDON:
Banned Pakistan trio of former captain Salman Butt, and fast-bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif go on trial in London today, charged with spot-fixing during a Test against England last year.
The three players have been charged with conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, and conspiracy to cheat. The players’ agent Mazhar Majeed will also go on trial charged with the same offences, which carry maximum sentences of seven years and two years in prison.
The charges relate to allegations of deliberately bowling no-balls during England’s fourth Test against Pakistan in August 2010.Amir and Majeed allegedly confessed to their crime last month to the court.
Meanwhile, a separate International Cricket Council anti-corruption tribunal had banned the trio for a minimum of five years each back in February.
