ISLAMABAD:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the federal government remains steadfastly committed to the development and prosperity of Gilgit Baltistan, as well as to ensuring a bright future for its youth. In a message on the 79th anniversary of Gilgit-Baltistan’s National Day on November 1, 2026, he said, “Today, on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the liberation of GilgitBaltistan and its accession to Pakistan, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. The exemplary resolve, courage, and sacrifices of the region’s leaders and its proud, spirited people in securing this freedom deserve the highest tribute.” He said, “November 1, 1947 while marking the end of Dogra rule in Gilgit Baltistan and the region’s accession to Pakistan — stands as a luminous and unforgettable day in its history. This day serves as a testament to our shared national resolve, bravery, and valour.” He said, “The profound and unwavering commitment to Pakistan, demonstrated by the people of this region across generations, is a source of national pride for us all. Today, we also pay a special tribute to all the mujahideen, ghazis, and martyrs who, through their sacrifices, etched history during the struggle for freedom.” “The geographical significance of Gilgit Baltistan undoubtedly grants it a distinguished position within Pakistan’s national landscape. The region holds immense potential for regional trade and, particularly in the context of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), for economic development and prosperity,” he added. He said in line with the commitment, the federal government has undertaken significant initiatives across various sectors in Gilgit-Baltistan, including energy, education, healthcare, employment, and public safety. The 16-megawatt Naltar Hydropower Project has been completed; it serves as a revolutionary initiative to address the energy challenges faced by the people of Gilgit Baltistan.” He said the federal government has launched a 100 megawatt solar energy project to provide the people of Gilgit Baltistan with affordable and accessible energy. A transparent digital lottery process was employed for the free distribution of solar panels — with a total capacity of 58 megawatts — among the public. To date, approximately 100,000 solar panels have been provided free of charge,” he added He said, “In the education sector, the foundation stones for four Danish Schools have been laid in Sultanabad, Bunji, Ghanche, and Skardu. These projects, valued at 12.46 billion rupees, will enable capable children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to access high-quality, modern education and excellent residential facilities.” “Under the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme, 4,245 laptops have been distributed among the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan so far. Furthermore, students from Gilgit-Baltistan have been included for the distribution of Chromebooks, on par with the rest of the country. To boost investment and employment opportunities, approval has been granted to designate Makpon Das as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Spanning 250 acres, this zone is expected to host 155 industrial and business enterprises, creating approximately 5,000 job opportunities,” he noted. He said, “The second phase of the Safe City project in Gilgit Baltistan aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order has been inaugurated, while a Safe City project is also being initiated in Skardu. The federal government is fully committed to supporting the provincial government in addressing its economic challenges and implementing institutional and administrative reforms, enabling it to enhance public services and development initiatives. Let us work together toward our shared national goal of progress and prosperity.” “On this historic occasion, while paying tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of our forefathers, let us renew our pledge to work collectively across the entire country, including Gilgit-Baltistan to ensure the provision of quality and equitable education, healthcare, and new employment opportunities. Long live Gilgit-Baltistan! Long live Pakistan!” he concluded.
