Archive of Our Own faces major outage: Fans panic over potential month-long outage

Archive of Our Own (AO3), one of the internet's largest fanfiction platforms, could remain inaccessible for several weeks following a major technical outage.

The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), the non-profit responsible for operating the website, has warned that restoring the service could take between two and four weeks.

The extended downtime has raised concerns among fanfiction readers and writers who rely on AO3 for free access to millions of stories covering a wide range of fandoms, characters and genres.

The platform is particularly important to online communities, offering volunteer-supported content that readers can access without subscription fees.

The outage was initially expected to last only a few hours. However, the estimated recovery period has since increased significantly.

The precise cause of the disruption has not yet been publicly established; however, the platform reportedly suffered from a "security incident".

The uncertainty has prompted varying reactions from social media users, ranging from frustrations to jokes about potentially losing access to their favourite stories for an extended period.

This is not the first time AO3 has experienced a significant service disruption.

In 2023, the platform suffered a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack claimed by a hacktivist organisation.

The incident reportedly took the website offline for several hours, with the group allegedly demanding $30,000 in ransom.

For now, AO3 users face a potentially lengthy wait while the organisation works to restore access.
