Joey King and LaKeith Stanfield team up for sci-fi romance comedy 'Safe Space'
Joey King and LaKeith Stanfield star in 'Safe Space', a sci-fi comedy about toxic relationships and modern dating

Joey King and LaKeith Stanfield are set to star in Safe Space, a provocative science fiction romantic comedy exploring toxic relationships, intimacy and modern dating.
The film will be directed by Independent Spirit Award-nominated filmmaker Gillian Wallace Horvat.
According to Variety, French sales company Lucky Number will launch international sales for the project at the American Film Market in Los Angeles, alongside CAA Media Finance and WME Independent. An exclusive sizzle reel will also be presented to prospective buyers.
Safe Space follows Sherrie, played by King, an intelligent but insecure scientist who ends a toxic relationship with a co-worker before becoming involved with an alien portrayed by Stanfield. Her new romance proves even more toxic, setting the stage for a satirical exploration of love and relationships.
The film combines science fiction, romance and comedy to examine how people connect and communicate in an increasingly screen-driven society.
Horvat praised the leading actors' collaboration, describing their on-screen chemistry as a major strength of the project. Safe Space will mark her second feature as a director following I Blame Society, which premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2020.
Producer Karen Lunder will produce the film through her banner, Outdoor Cat. The project is currently in the financing stage, with production scheduled to begin in the United States in the second quarter of 2027. Additional casting is underway.
King's credits include Bullet Train, The Act and We Were the Lucky Ones. She received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for portraying Gypsy Rose Blanchard in The Act.
Stanfield earned an Academy Award nomination for his supporting performance in Judas and the Black Messiah. His other credits include Get Out, Uncut Gems and Die My Love.
A release date and further casting details for Safe Space have not yet been announced.
