‘The One About Matthew Perry’ earns 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics

The three-part series features personal accounts from Perry’s sister, close friends and former television executives

Netflix’s three-part documentary series The One About Matthew Perry has received a strong early response from critics, earning a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on reviews as of October 28, 2026.

Directed by Mary Robertson, the series explores the life of the late actor, best known for playing Chandler Bing across all 10 seasons of the hit sitcom Friends, which aired from 1994 to 2004. Perry died on October 28, 2023, aged 54.

The documentary features accounts from people who knew Perry personally and professionally, including his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, his best friend David Pressman, actor Kevin Pollak and former NBC president Warren Littlefield. Their recollections examine his humour, generosity, vulnerabilities and long struggle with addiction.

The title draws on the familiar naming convention used for Friends episodes, many of which began with the words “The One”.

Critics have praised the series for its willingness to address difficult aspects of Perry’s life rather than presenting a simplified portrait of a famous actor. However, the 100% Rotten Tomatoes score reflects the reviews available at the time and may change as more critics publish their assessments. The site’s official critics’ consensus was still pending when the score was reported.

Alison Herman of Variety described the series as a deeply sad account of a talented performer whose success and humour could not overcome a chronic disease. Daniel Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter also gave the documentary a positive review, although he felt some material was less compelling than other parts.

Judy Berman of Time highlighted Perry’s vulnerability, while Lucy Mangan of The Guardian praised the series for adding nuance and depth to his story.

The documentary follows the 2025 release of Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, a separate documentary about the actor produced by Peacock.

All three episodes of The One About Matthew Perry are available to stream on Netflix. The series is rated TV-MA, meaning it is intended for mature audiences.
