England captain Harry Brook has said his team would return to the drawing board and keep their approach simple as they attempt to revive their campaign in the ODI tri-series after Sri Lanka chased down a target of 430 in a dramatic contest on Thursday.

Sri Lanka pulled off the second-highest successful chase in men's one-day international history, reaching 430-8 with one ball to spare at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium after Brook's record-breaking double century had powered England to 429-4.

Brook struck 202, the fastest double century in men's ODI cricket and the first by an England batsman in the format, but his remarkable innings proved insufficient as Sri Lanka produced a stunning response.

Pavan Rathnayake led the chase with 130, sharing century partnerships with Avishka Fernando, who scored 97, and Dasun Shanaka, who also made 97. Janith Liyanage then struck a blistering 61 off 27 balls to take Sri Lanka over the line.

England have now lost both their matches and face the prospect of elimination while unbeaten Pakistan have won both their games. Sri Lanka's victory has strengthened their position in the race for a place in the October 31 final.

Brook said England needed to learn from their mistakes and make the most of their remaining opportunities.

“Yeah, we’ve got to go back to the drawing board a little bit. We know where we’ve gone wrong and, unfortunately, we did not execute well enough with the ball,” Brook said.

“We’ve got a great opportunity in the next couple of games to try and nail down a spot in the final.”

He added that the team needed to keep things simple, back themselves and recover quickly from the disappointment.

England will face Pakistan at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday in a crucial match for their hopes of reaching the final.

Brook admitted that the defeat had overshadowed his outstanding individual performance.

“It was a nice innings, but being on the losing side, it has no value whatsoever in my eyes. Its heart-breaking. It’s very disappointing that we haven’t been able to defend 430, but that’s life, that’s cricket,” he said.

The England captain described the match as an incredible contest and praised Sri Lanka for their determination in completing the chase.

“Incredible game of cricket. Both teams were exceptional,” Brook said.

“Sri Lanka just outplayed us, unfortunately. We could not quite hit our straps with the ball and played into their strengths a little bit. Again, they played exceptional cricket to knock off the target. I think, as you said, first time in 20 years is an incredible achievement, so fair play to them.”

England had also suffered an 87-run defeat against Pakistan after a batting collapse, leaving them under pressure to deliver in their remaining fixtures if they are to qualify for the final.
