Kacey Musgraves is extending the era of her latest album with a new companion project, Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes, scheduled for release on January 15, 2027.

The Grammy-winning country singer announced the 16-track album on Thursday, October 22. The release will feature 11 original songs and five covers, expanding on the country, Tex-Mex and regional Mexican influences explored on her sixth studio album, Middle of Nowhere, released in May.

Musgraves will give fans an early taste of the project with two tracks, “Weekend in Texas” and “Mi Tesoro”, arriving on Friday, October 23. The latter is her interpretation of the norteño classic, while the new collection also includes a Spanish-language version of “Uncertain, TX”, featuring Mexican music group Intocable.

The album’s tracklist includes “Pretty Horses”, “Hard Conversations”, “Denim on Denim”, “Figure Out My Life”, “Caballero”, “The Vacation Song”, “(Hey Baby) Qué Pasó?”, “Rodeo”, “Desert Eyes” and “Pity Party”. It also features a live version of “Tú Solo Tú”, recorded with Mariachi Oro de América, alongside “All My Exes (Kacey’s Version)” and a cover of “Before the Next Teardrop Falls”.

The companion album builds on the musical direction of Middle of Nowhere, which drew inspiration from Musgraves’ Texas upbringing and incorporated traditional country sounds alongside influences from Norteño, Zydeco and bluegrass. The original record featured collaborations with Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings and Gregory Alan Isakov.

Musgraves previously explained that the album’s title came from a sign in her hometown of Golden, Texas, describing the area as “Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere”. The phrase became a starting point for a project exploring solitude, personal growth and the idea of finding a sense of home beyond a physical location.

The singer has continued to revisit the album’s Mexican musical influences since its release. Earlier in October, she released a Spanish-language version of “Uncertain, TX” with Intocable, reworking the original track through a collaboration rooted in the cultural sounds of Texas.

With Tex Mex Tapes, Musgraves is expanding that exploration through new material, reinterpretations and live recordings. The release arrives as she wraps up her Middle of Nowhere Tour, with two final performances scheduled in Seattle on October 26 and 27.
