Chappell Roan surprised fans by bringing Christina Aguilera on stage during her Super Graphic Spectacular concert in Los Angeles, where the pop stars performed Aguilera’s hit “Beautiful” and a duet of Roan’s song “Coffee”.

The surprise appearance took place on Wednesday, October 21, at the Shrine Auditorium. Before introducing Aguilera, Roan paid tribute to the singer, crediting her with helping pave the way for women in pop music to express themselves freely through their music and fashion.

“I want to introduce this person [who] honestly paved the way for me and all women in pop to do whatever the f--- they want, sing and wear whatever the f--- they want,” Roan told the audience, adding that she was grateful to Aguilera. “She’s a f---ing legend.”

Aguilera performed her 2002 hit “Beautiful”, one of the defining songs of her career, before joining Roan for “Coffee”. Aguilera described the latter track as “one of my favourite songs of hers”, making the collaboration a meeting of two generations of pop artists.

The performance formed part of Roan’s two-night Super Graphic Spectacular event, which brings together musicians and other performers for a celebration of pop music and queer culture. The first night also featured Lola Young, Tinashe, Amanda Lepore, Blaine Petrovia and Kyra Jeté.

Roan also performed a version of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Expectations”, following the release of a remix featuring the two singers earlier in the month.

The second night, scheduled for Thursday, October 22, includes performances by Caroline Polachek, MUNA, Alisa Mae, Fantasia Royale Gaga and Sweaty Eddie, with Roan headlining again.

Beyond the performances, the event has a charitable purpose. All proceeds will benefit Roan’s Midwest Princess Project, which supports transgender young people and LGBTQ+ communities by helping fund organisations providing resources and assistance.

Aguilera’s appearance also highlighted the influence she has had on younger performers, including Roan, who has become known for her theatrical style, bold fashion choices and outspoken approach to self-expression. By bringing the veteran pop star on stage, Roan celebrated an artist whose music and public image helped expand expectations of what a female pop performer could be.

The unexpected collaboration quickly became a highlight of the Los Angeles show, bringing together Aguilera’s signature vocals and Roan’s distinctive pop sensibility for a performance that honoured both their music and the influence artists can have across generations.
