DC Studios’ Clayface has received a mostly positive early response from critics, earning a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 83 reviews following the lifting of its review embargo on October 21, 2026.
Directed by James Watkins, the horror thriller is the third feature film released under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, following Superman and Supergirl. Its early critical score places it between the two earlier releases, with Superman holding an 83% rating and Supergirl at 52%, according to the figures reported by Forbes.
The film follows Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, a young man from Gotham who rises to Hollywood stardom before a violent encounter with a crime boss leaves his face disfigured. Seeking a way to repair the damage, Hagen turns to scientist Caitlyn Corr, portrayed by Naomi Ackie, for an experimental treatment. However, the procedure brings disturbing side effects and sends him towards a violent path of revenge.
Several critics have praised the film for embracing horror and exploring a lesser known character from DC Comics. Variety critic Guy Lodge described the film as an enjoyable genre experiment, while reviews highlighted its gruesome imagery and willingness to pursue a darker direction.
Other critics have been less impressed. IndieWire critic Kate Erbland criticised the film’s uneven plotting, character motivations and overall execution. Barry Hertz of The Globe and Mail also raised concerns about its lack of self-awareness and apparent borrowing from other films.
Reviews have therefore offered contrasting assessments of whether Clayface successfully balances its horror elements with the demands of a superhero franchise.
The character first appeared in DC Comics in 1940 as Basil Karlo, while the Matt Hagen version debuted in 1961. The film brings a new interpretation of the villain to the big screen, with Harries leading a cast that also includes David Dencik, Max Minghella, Nancy Carroll, Joshua James and Eddie Marsan.
Clayface is scheduled for preview screenings on October 22 before its nationwide theatrical release on October 23. Its Rotten Tomatoes score may change as additional reviews are published.
