Cyberpunk 2077 is getting multiplayer co-op support through NightCoop, a fan-made modification that allows up to eight players to explore Night City together.

The mod is set to enter open beta on October 23 at 11am EDT, following a period of closed testing.

The release comes as CD Projekt Red prepares the game's official 2.5 update, arriving on October 22 alongside the recent release of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime.

The update includes new quests, a perk enabling dual wielding and console mod support, among other additions.

However, NightCoop introduces a different way to experience the role-playing game by allowing players to complete activities together.

According to the mod's recently released trailer, the modification synchronises the game world so that combat and stealth encounters work across all participating players.

The synchronisation also extends to special abilities. When a player activates Sandevistan to slow time, other participants can see the character moving with an afterimage effect.

Dialogue and story decisions are handled through a voting system, with the majority choice determining what happens for the group.

The trailer also demonstrates cooperative heists, showing players taking on different roles, including operating cameras and drones while another player leads an assault.

NightCoop will additionally support player-versus-player (PvP) combat, which the host can enable or disable. The system considers players' equipment and character statistics during shootouts, while adjusting damage to account for differences in character levels.

To install the modification, players must download NightCoop and the RED4ext library. The host can then load an existing save or create a new co-op game, allowing other players to join as their own versions of V.

CD Projekt Red has previously supported community modding, including introducing console mod support for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Cyberpunk 2077's RED4ext library has accumulated 12.6 million downloads on Nexus Mods, highlighting the popularity of community-created modifications.
