ATHENS:

Two police officers and two members of the public were injured in an explosion at a building in central Athens on Wednesday, Greek police said.

The blast occurred in the Kolonos area when officers inspected a backpack suspected of containing drugs, a police official said. Police had earlier received calls from a resident and the building manager reporting suspected drugs at the entrance.

The explosion went off as officers examined the backpack and may have been remotely activated, a second police official said. Parts of an explosive device were later found at the scene.

All four injured people were taken away in ambulances, police said. The building manager was among those hurt in the blast. Police are not treating the incident as a terrorist act, an official said. The homicide unit is leading the investigation.
