Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Prestige’ returns to cinemas for 20th anniversary with first ever IMAX and 70mm theatrical screenings
Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed thriller The Prestige is returning to cinemas in January 2027 to mark the 20th anniversary of its original release, giving audiences their first opportunity to experience the film on IMAX and 70mm screens.
Disney will re-release the 2006 film on January 29, 2027. The anniversary screenings will offer a new theatrical experience for the mystery thriller, which stars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as rival stage magicians whose professional competition develops into an increasingly dangerous personal feud.
Nolan expressed his excitement about bringing the film back to cinemas, particularly through the premium formats.
“I’m very excited to bring ‘The Prestige’ back to the big screen, and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on IMAX for the first time,” the director said in a statement.
Originally released on October 20, 2006, The Prestige explores obsession, sacrifice and deception as its two central characters attempt to outdo one another through increasingly elaborate illusions. The cast also includes Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis and David Bowie.
The film earned approximately $100 million worldwide and received two Academy Award nominations, further establishing its reputation as one of Nolan’s distinctive works. He co-wrote the screenplay with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, and produced the film alongside Emma Thomas and Aaron Ryder.
The anniversary release also highlights Nolan’s longstanding association with large format cinema. In subsequent years, he directed major productions including The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar and Oppenheimer, helping expand audience interest in IMAX presentations.
His later projects have continued to demonstrate the commercial potential of theatrical releases, particularly when presented in premium formats.
For fans revisiting The Prestige, the January screenings will provide an opportunity to experience the film’s intricate visual storytelling on a larger scale.
