Cardi B made her NPR Tiny Desk Concert debut on October 19, performing eight songs with a live band in an intimate office setting that attracted one of the largest crowds the venue’s producers had seen.
The Grammy-winning rapper delivered a set spanning her biggest hits and more personal tracks, showcasing her versatility through stripped-down arrangements and playful audience interactions.
The performance opened with “Hello”, followed by “ErrTime”, before Cardi shifted to more emotional material with “Man of Your Word” and “Be Careful”. The change in mood highlighted a more vulnerable side of the artist, whose music is often associated with bold lyrics and energetic production.
Cardi later brought the energy back with “Up” and “AH HA”, joking, “Change the vibes, change the vibes,” before moving into the upbeat tracks.
She also performed “Bodak Yellow”, the breakthrough hit that established her as a major force in hip-hop, and closed the set with “I Like It”, her Latin-influenced hit featuring elements of the boogaloo tradition.
Musical director Adam Blackstone led the accompanying band, playing bass and keyboards. The ensemble also featured guitarist Clayton Sears, drummer Cedric Thompson, keyboardist Eugene Roberts, saxophonist Kenneth Whalum and trumpeter Melvin Jones. DJ Ray G handled the turntables, while background vocalists Tiffany Stevens and Ebony Franklin supported the arrangements.
NPR producer Alanté Serene described the gathering as one of the largest crowds she had seen at the office, reflecting the interest surrounding Cardi’s appearance.
The NPR Tiny Desk series is known for bringing established and emerging artists into a compact performance space, allowing musicians to reinterpret their work through live arrangements.
Cardi’s eight-song set demonstrated how the format can offer a fresh perspective on familiar tracks while highlighting an artist’s personality and musical range.
