Gwyneth Paltrow is set to star in The Apology, a new thriller series from A24 that has received a two-season straight-to-series order from Netflix.
The project will mark Paltrow’s first series regular role and Oscar-winning filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg’s US television directing debut.
According to Deadline, the series was acquired by Netflix in a competitive deal. Joe Murtagh, known for creating the 2023 series The Woman in the Wall, is writing the thriller and serving as its showrunner.
The Apology follows Evelyn, played by Paltrow, and her husband, Caleb Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years earlier in a cold case that attracted national attention. Their lives take an unexpected turn when a stranger arrives and confesses to the crime, raising hopes that the family may finally receive justice.
However, the situation becomes more complicated when the couple learns that the killer could receive a reduced sentence. Faced with the possibility of an outcome they consider unbearable, Evelyn and Caleb decide to take matters into their own hands.
The series will be executive produced by Cut To’s Hipps, Murtagh, Vinterberg and Paltrow. Cut To, which is based at A24, has developed several high-profile television projects, including Discretion, starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, for Paramount+, as well as Trigger Point, featuring Joel Edgerton, for Netflix.
Paltrow previously appeared in a recurring role on Fox’s musical comedy series Glee. Her television credits also include The Politician, while her film work includes Shakespeare in Love, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She recently starred in Marty Supreme.
Vinterberg, who won an Oscar for the Danish film Another Round, will direct the Netflix thriller as he makes his debut directing US television. The two-season commitment also represents a significant early move for Netflix as it continues investing in major original programming.
