'The Dick Van Dyke Show' almost had a second Petrie child
The Dick Van Dyke Show could have taken a different direction if creator Carl Reiner had followed his original plan to introduce a second child to the Petrie family during the sitcom’s first season.
David Van Deusen, an archivist and historian who has spent decades researching the classic television series, revealed the little-known detail in his book From Fandom to Friendships: My Adventures with The Dick Van Dyke Show Cast.
According to Van Deusen, Reiner’s original character descriptions included a baby who would join Rob and Laura Petrie’s household alongside their son, Ritchie. The planned addition was intended to inspire storylines exploring sibling rivalry and the challenges older children face when a new baby arrives.
Reiner reportedly envisioned episodes examining how Ritchie would adjust to having a younger sibling. However, the second child never became part of the family’s story, leaving the original concept as an intriguing piece of the show’s history.
The Dick Van Dyke Show premiered on CBS in October 1961 and ran for five seasons. The sitcom starred Dick Van Dyke as Rob Petrie, a comedy writer working on a television variety programme, and Mary Tyler Moore as his wife, Laura.
Larry Mathews played their son, Ritchie, whose family life provided an important part of the show’s domestic comedy. The series also followed Rob’s professional experiences alongside fellow writers Sally Rogers and Buddy Sorrell.
Van Deusen has dedicated years to preserving the sitcom’s legacy, including publishing The Walnut Times newsletter for two decades. His latest book shares behind-the-scenes stories and experiences involving cast members and guest stars.
As the beloved sitcom marks its 65th anniversary, Van Deusen’s discovery offers fans a fresh look at Carl Reiner’s original creative vision and the family storyline that never made it to television.
