KARACHI:

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) MPA Naseer Ahmed has expressed concern over allegations that a suspended employee of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and two other men extorted money from a resident of Orangi Town by threatening to demolish his house.

The MPA said no one should be allowed to harass citizens or extort money by misusing the name of a government institution.

A case has been registered on the complaint of Nadeem Zafar against suspended SBCA employee Riaz Hussain alias Mulla and two others, identified as Tariq and Manzoor, Ahmed said.

The complainant alleged that the suspects demanded Rs3 million from him, threatening to demolish his house if he failed to pay. After allegedly receiving Rs500,000, they reportedly demanded a further Rs2.5 million.

Ahmed said it was alarming that Riaz Hussain was allegedly continuing to intimidate residents and extort money despite being suspended from service. He added that the suspects had allegedly used the SBCA's name to collect money from low-income residents.

He called for a thorough investigation into the allegations and legal action against anyone found involved in using the authority's name for extortion.
