Zara Larsson has defended her decision to speak openly about political and social issues after revealing that her outspoken views have cost her lucrative business opportunities, including a brand deal worth $3 million.
In an interview with fellow Swedish singer Robyn for Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians series, published on October 13, Larsson discussed the professional consequences of expressing her opinions publicly. Asked whether speaking out had cost her opportunities, she replied, “There’s many,” without naming the companies involved or revealing the value of the other deals she mentioned.
The singer has previously identified one specific loss. In an interview published on April 3, 2026, Larsson said she lost a $3 million brand deal following a social media exchange about abortion. The singer described it as the largest brand opportunity she had received.
The controversy began after a fan posted on TikTok that she had attended one of Larsson’s concerts before realising she was pregnant and later having an abortion. Larsson responded with a joke about the experience, drawing attention and criticism online.
Larsson subsequently defended the humour behind her response and argued that jokes could help people discuss serious subjects. She did not identify the brand that allegedly withdrew the deal, so its identity and the circumstances behind the decision remain undisclosed.
During her conversation with Robyn, Larsson also explained how her interest in social issues developed during her teenage years. She began blogging at around 13 or 14, reading news reports and discussing subjects with people who disagreed with her.
She credited the internet, Tumblr, Wikipedia and feminist voices with helping her understand injustice and develop her opinions. Topics including abortion, immigration and human rights have remained part of her public commentary.
