Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help complete principal photography on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves deals with an ongoing family matter, according to a statement confirmed by Variety.

The Oscar winning filmmaker approached Reeves to offer assistance, with DC Studios supporting the arrangement. A studio representative said Soderbergh would work closely with Reeves, the cast and crew to complete the remaining filming while preserving the director’s creative vision.

Soderbergh also praised Reeves’ work on the first The Batman, describing it as carefully constructed and visually distinctive. He said his goal was to help capture footage that would fit seamlessly with the material already filmed, allowing Reeves to finish the highly anticipated sequel.

Reeves clarified the situation in a post on X on October 15, stressing that he was not leaving the project. He expressed gratitude to Soderbergh for helping during a challenging period and thanked supporters for their concern.

Warner Bros and DC Studios had announced a temporary production pause earlier in October, explaining that Reeves needed time to address a family matter. The latest arrangement allows filming to move towards completion with Soderbergh assisting behind the camera.

The sequel has faced several scheduling changes since its announcement at CinemaCon in 2022. Initially scheduled for October 2, 2026, its release was moved to October 1, 2027, before being postponed again to February 2028.

Robert Pattinson is returning as the Caped Crusader. The cast also includes Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.

Soderbergh is known for directing films including Traffic, Erin Brockovich and Ocean’s Eleven. His experience across different genres makes him a notable choice to support the production during its final weeks of principal photography.

Despite the unusual arrangement, Reeves remains involved in the film. The collaboration is intended to help complete filming without replacing his creative leadership, as anticipation continues to build for the next chapter of Pattinson’s Batman story.
