Blows to head suspected in elderly couple's murder
What began as a grisly disturbing discovery at a North Karachi residence has taken a grim turn, with initial post-mortem findings suggesting that an elderly couple were killed by repeated blows to the head with a hard, blunt object.
The bodies of 70-year-old Muhammad Yameen and his 65-year-old wife, Nafees Akhtar, were found inside their house on Wednesday night, triggering a murder investigation. The initial medical findings have established multiple head injuries on both victims, although the precise circumstances surrounding their deaths remain under investigation.
The couple had recently returned to Pakistan from Canada and were staying at the North Karachi property, which they had allowed relatives to use for a long time. Renovation and maintenance work was underway at the house, adding another dimension to the police probe.
The couple had planned to sell the house and two adjoining shops before returning to Canada, where their two sons and a daughter reside.
Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said samples had been collected to determine whether the victims had been administered any intoxicating substance or poison. The final findings will be compiled after the chemical analysis report is received.
Investigators from the Sir Syed police station said evidence had been collected from the crime scene. No signs of robbery were found at the house, prompting investigators to examine the possibility of personal enmity as a motive for the killings. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from cameras installed in the surrounding area and tracing labourers who had been working at the couple's house as part of the investigation.
