Actor Inde Navarrette has revealed how studying anime, including Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer, helped her understand storytelling and develop her screenwriting skills while waiting for her acting career to progress.
Navarrette, known for playing Nikki Freeman in Obsession, explored film and television storytelling during the period between completing the film and its eventual release.
She also streamed games on Twitch to make ends meet while considering her next career steps.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on October 14, Navarrette explained how comparing anime series helped her understand different narrative techniques.
“I transitioned into studying film and watching movies and asking, ‘Why do I like them?’” she said.
She highlighted the contrasting approaches used in Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer, particularly their handling of timelines.
“With Jujutsu Kaisen, they play with timelines, right? With Demon Slayer, they don’t, it’s very linear. And what does that mean and how does that affect with storytelling?”
Navarrette said she examined how information revealed early in an episode could become significant much later, using those lessons to inform her own screenwriting.
A self-described nerd and keen gamer, Navarrette is also interested in voice acting.
In an August interview, she identified the Resident Evil franchise as a dream project, explaining: “I love that world, specifically — the Resident Evil world.”
Meanwhile, she is preparing to play Rogue in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot.
Navarrette has stressed her commitment to the character, saying: “I’ve studied that character. I want to do it justice for myself, for [director Jake Schrieier], for what they want to portray and also for what I as a fan want her to be like.”
