Kathy Griffin has criticised comedian Shane Gillis following his controversial Saturday Night Live monologue, describing him as a “hack” while defending his right to express himself through comedy.
In an interview with Page Six, published on October 14, Griffin said comedians should retain their freedom of speech, even when audiences disagree with their material.
“I think as a comic I’m always going to fight for the First Amendment and his right to say it and yet I don’t have to like it,” she said. “So, I defend his right to say it, and I also defend everyone else’s right to think less of him.”
Griffin also criticised a wider group of male comedians, arguing that many rely on similar material and outdated jokes about women.
She referenced comedian Joe Rogan while discussing performers who gained popularity through podcasts and social media.
“There are a lot of hacks who are doing very well, and they come from TikTok or the podcast world,” Griffin said.
Gillis attracted criticism after his October 10 SNL monologue included remarks about women’s gym clothing, describing female gymgoers as dressing “like wh*res”.
His comments prompted responses from several public figures, including Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy, who challenged the remarks as misogynistic.
Griffin also emphasised the importance of comedians adapting their material over time, reflecting on changes in her own approach to comedy.
“I think it’s important that comedians evolve and change with the times,” she explained.
The comedian added that she had previously used language she now regrets, saying, “I want to think that I’m still learning.”
Griffin is currently on tour and was scheduled to appear at The Town Hall on Friday.
