Aaron Paul has paid tribute to his Breaking Bad co-star RJ Mitte following the actor’s death at the age of 34, remembering their final meeting and praising his kindness and strength.

Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr in the Emmy-winning series, died on Monday in Brownsville, Texas. A representative confirmed that his cause of death was suicide.

Paul, who portrayed Jesse Pinkman in the series, shared a tribute on social media, describing Mitte as “an inspiration for so many”.

“I am so sorry you were hurting my friend. I wish we knew,” Paul wrote. “You constantly had a smile on your face and you took every single challenge that was given to you with such confidence and grace.”

The actor recalled meeting Mitte when he was “a little boy” and watching him “grow into a beautiful young man” who took on “every challenge head on”.

“The last time we saw each other I kept calling you Superman. You reminded me of him. You reminded me of him because you always led with kindness and strength. It was blinding. You were born into a world with challenges but you never let any of that stand in your way,” Paul wrote.

Mitte was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy at the age of three. His character, Walter White Jr, shared the condition, although it was portrayed more prominently on screen.

He appeared throughout Breaking Bad’s run from 2008 to 2013. In 2013, Mitte received the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award, named in honour of the first actor with a disability to win an Oscar.

Addressing readers who might be struggling, Paul encouraged them to seek support and connect with others.

“Hold each other up. That’s what this life is all about. Connect with someone you care about and say I love you,” he wrote.

He concluded his tribute, “RJ, I love you my friend. I’m so sorry.”
