Michael Jackson’s landmark 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance is set to receive a documentary treatment, with Hulu and ESPN announcing a new film exploring how the singer changed the event’s entertainment legacy.

Titled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, the documentary is scheduled to premiere in February on Hulu and ESPN, according to Deadline, which reported the announcement on October 13.

The film will revisit Jackson’s appearance at Super Bowl XXVII at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, where the global superstar delivered a performance that helped reshape expectations for halftime entertainment.

Jackson opened the show by standing motionless on stage for around two minutes, building anticipation before launching into his set. The performance included songs such as “Billie Jean” and “Black or White”, alongside “We Are the World”, which featured more than 3,000 local children.

The documentary will examine the planning behind the show, Jackson’s preparation with his team and the performance’s lasting impact. It will also include previously unseen footage of the singer and those involved in bringing the production to life.

The performance followed a period when the NFL faced competition for halftime viewers. In 1992, the In Living Color television special reportedly drew millions of viewers away from the Super Bowl broadcast. Jackson’s appearance the following year helped establish the halftime show as a major television attraction in its own right.

According to the report, the 1993 event marked the first time the Super Bowl’s second half attracted a larger audience than the first, highlighting the impact of the musical performance on viewership.

Bao Nguyen will direct and produce the documentary. Skydance Sports is producing the project alongside Optimum Productions and NFL Films. Producers include Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney for Skydance Sports, John Branca for Optimum Productions, and Amit Dey for Into the Deep End Films.

The documentary will explore how Jackson’s appearance helped establish the modern halftime show as a major pop culture event, with his performance continuing to influence the spectacle surrounding the annual championship game.
