Korra’s voice actress cried over character's portrayal in 'Avatar: Seven Havens'

Janet Varney said Korra’s portrayal in 'Avatar: Seven Havens' left her devastated, as fans debate series’ storyline

Janet Varney, the voice actress behind Korra in The Legend of Korra, has shared her emotional reaction to the character’s portrayal in the new animated series Avatar: Seven Havens.

The storyline presents Korra as a figure blamed for a catastrophic event that ended the world, prompting debate among fans of the franchise.

In Seven Havens, Korra is portrayed as a figure who caused a cataclysm rather than protecting the world. Her legacy has created fear of the Avatar, leading the new Avatar twins, Pavi and Nisha, to be kept hidden instead of being celebrated.

Varney described her reaction after watching the series’ pilot, saying she was deeply affected by the way younger characters spoke about Korra.

“I sobbed through this pilot episode. I was shattered. I cannot emphasize it enough. I finished it, and my partner was like, ‘So?’ And I was like, ‘I can’t even tell you what happened. I’m so upset, crying.’”

She also expressed concern for viewers who have supported Korra throughout the franchise.

“And I was like, ‘I’m so worried about all the people that love Korra and already defend Korra.’ And I had to go back and watch with fresh eyes after I had deeply grieved.”

Varney acknowledged that the series’ direction remains uncertain and encouraged fans to remain open to future developments.

“I know we don’t know what will happen, and I want people to keep the faith, but who knows? But just for me, watching children talk about her as if she’s a monster was heartbreaking. I mean, it really hurt. I’m not her, but I know what she means to some people, and it just really hurt.”

The storyline has divided the Avatar community, with some viewers criticising the treatment of Korra’s legacy. However, the series’ mystery leaves open the possibility that further revelations will explain the events surrounding her actions.

Other criticism has focused on the representation of different cultures in Seven Havens, with some fans arguing that the world’s distinct regional identities have been reduced.

The series has only introduced one haven so far, leaving further world-building to be explored as the story progresses.

Seven Havens has reportedly been renewed for four seasons, with its opening episodes beginning to establish the mystery surrounding Korra and the world she left behind.
