Maren Morris, Saturday Night Live writer Jo Sunday and several other public figures have responded to comedian Shane Gillis’ joke about women’s gym clothing during his hosting appearance on the NBC sketch show on October 10.

During his opening monologue, Gillis said women at the gym “dress like wh—s now”, adding: “Look, I'm sorry there's no other way to describe it.” The remarks prompted responses from celebrities on social media in the following days.

Morris responded on October 12 by sharing an Instagram video in which she smiled at the camera before raising her middle finger.

The text displayed over the clip read, “me being a wh— at the gym”, while her caption said, “Leave my gym short wedgie out of it.” The singer used one of her own tracks from 2025 as the soundtrack.

Sunday, a writer for SNL, also shared a post on Instagram. Alongside a photo of herself, she wrote: “off i go to gym 🙂 wh— vibes lol”.

Former SNL cast member Ego Nwodim joined the online responses by sharing a gym selfie captioned “Wh— reporting for duty”. She later posted a picture of her post-workout meal, writing, “Getting my 30 grams of protein in after heauxing.”

Actor Dan Levy addressed the remarks in an Instagram video, arguing that short shorts do not make women “wh—-”, but that men who use the term are misogynists.

He also urged more men to speak out against sexual assault, saying complacency had contributed to an environment in which women face such violence.

Levy referenced the Cornell 7 case, involving allegations of gang rape against seven fraternity members at Cornell University in 2024. “Men need to be defending women more,” he said.
