Gemma Chan has addressed speculation about her return as Astrid in the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians sequel series, following her omission from the recently announced cast list.

The 43-year-old actress discussed the possibility while attending the 2026 BFI London Film Festival screening of her upcoming film Josephine.

Chan expressed her affection for the original film and its cast while leaving the door open to reprising her role.

“I love Crazy Rich Asians, I love the people involved,” Chan told Film Updates. “Astrid has such a special place in my heart so I hope so. I can’t say any more than that for now.”

Her comments come after the television sequel was announced with several returning cast members, although Chan and Harry Shum Jr. were notably absent from the initial line-up.

Their omission has prompted questions from fans, particularly given the characters’ storyline in the 2018 romantic comedy.

In the original film, Astrid, Nick Young’s cousin, decides to end her marriage to Michael, played by Pierre Png.

The mid-credits scene then sees her reconnect with former fiancé Charlie Wu, portrayed by Shum Jr., setting up the possibility of a deeper exploration of their relationship.

A spin-off film centred on Astrid and Charlie’s romance was reportedly in development in 2022, although the latest series announcement has left the characters’ future uncertain.

Meanwhile, a Broadway musical adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians is also in development, with original film director Jon M. Chu attached to direct.

For now, Chan has not confirmed her involvement in the sequel series, leaving fans waiting for further casting announcements.
