The BBC is developing a two part docuseries about Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, examining her rise to international fame, cultural influence and increasingly divisive public profile.

Produced by Rogan Scotland, whose credits include Becoming Frida Kahlo, the series will explore Rowling’s life against three decades of social, political and technological change. According to the announcement, it will consider how she became one of Britain’s most polarising public figures.

Rowling rose to prominence after publishing the first Harry Potter book in 1997. The seven book series became a global success, expanding into films, video games, theme parks, television projects and a substantial merchandising business.

The documentary will also examine the controversy surrounding Rowling’s views on transgender rights. Supporters have praised her as a defender of women’s rights, while critics have accused her of opposing transgender equality. Her positions have contributed to divisions between the author and some actors and fans associated with the Harry Potter franchise.

Rowling will not participate in the documentary. Instead, the production will draw on archival material, her writing and interviews with people who have worked with her.

Simon Young, the BBC’s head of commissioning for history, said the 30th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book made this an appropriate moment to examine Rowling’s influence. He highlighted the significance of the fictional character, the publishing and filmmaking phenomenon surrounding the franchise, and the author’s polarising public reputation.

Provisionally titled J.K. Rowling, the series is scheduled to air on BBC Two and BBC Scotland, as well as on the BBC iPlayer streaming service. BBC Studios will handle international distribution.

The announcement arrives ahead of HBO’s planned television adaptation of Harry Potter. The new series is intended to revisit Rowling’s books in a different format, bringing the franchise to another generation of viewers.

The BBC has not provided a specific broadcast date for the documentary in the announcement. Its two episodes are expected to offer a retrospective on Rowling’s literary achievements and the public debates that have shaped her reputation.
